Tried to start an HD-5G that I bought. It had been sitting for a number of years. Changed oil, drained all fuel, new filters, purged lines, new injectors, etc. in preparation for starting. Timed injectors, etc.
Put propane heater in barn where HD-5 is and gut temps up in good shape.
Engine cranks great, puts out quite a bit of smoke and is just on the brink of starting. It runs for probably 3 seconds after the starter kicks out and dies.
It acts like timing may still be off, but I don't know what it would be. I confirmed there is good air flow through the blower. On my old TD-18, it kind of sputters like this but then kicks in and kind of cleans itself out. I don't think the 2-71 has any valve train advance---or does it?
Suggestions are appreciated.
Roger, sounds to me like the compression is down, but maybe all is not lost.I find that engines that have rested for quite a while and were not in perfect health anyway are hard to start the first time, but if you can get it running for a little while, a healing takes place.I think the sealing oil film on rings and cylinders goes away, then we add a little crud between valves and seats so they leak a little, then we let the oil thicken including the hyd. oil, and the poor old starter just can't spin it fast enough to light the fire.
I have started several balky diesels for the first time in a long time by feeding them a bit of lube oil.Not enough to hydrostatic lock the engine. It actually seems to be more effective than starting fluid in establishing the first light off.
Turning the engine faster will help but often must be done by pushing or pulling the machine. You will be surprised how little movement at a brisk rate will start that engine with lowered compression. The leaks don't have time to hurt you.
I think the best way to oil the cylinders on a
jimmy might be through the air box inspection holes with pistons on the bottom. Can't say as I've done this trick on a jimmy.
Starting fluid tends to wash the oil film away so it can work against you.Good luck.
I should have added that when I gave it a shot of starting fluid, it acted like it was getting too much compression---and didn't fire. Yet, after it got the starting fluid blown out, it did act like it wanted to start on the regular diesel. My normal experience with ether is that it causes the engine to fire easily. It acted almost the reverse with the 2-71
Something that I have used to start engines that works fair and may work for you is WD-40 just remove the air filter and apply it like any other staring fluid .

How much is a Allis Chalmers H-3 or HD-3 crawler/loader worth these days? It's been gone through with a fine tooth comb, and is in great working condition.
If the UC is in as great a shape and run as well as you say it does, it should go for 5-10K for the machine and that is on the lower side of the value scale. Comparable sized machines from other non-Cat vendors have been ranging between 12-20K that there are some that are way lower than that too.
The value will be in the condition of the Undercarriage. If has been that well maintained you a price premium may be warranted since you are more likely than not, not to have problems for a long time. Again abuse ect can cut short the life of any machine. I would look for the higher side if it is as cherry as you say. It is a nice small crawler, very good size for acreage guys and small enought to haul around with out needing a huge semi and special hauling permits. They were also closer to the end of the production line for AC so some parts are still out there for the machine that is new.
A great project tractor and you should be able to resell it for what you have in it assuming it does not get ruined, economy fails ... all the rest of the stuff that affects value.
Good Luck

HD4 grousers
Looking for a set of HD4 grousers in 14 or 16 inch width. Does anyone have a set they would part with or know of where I could find a used or new set? I have 12 inch pads currently and would trade up if possible.
Thanks in advance.

How about 14" new one's? Let me know. HT
Hi every one! I am looking at a AC model M dozer with blade 1500$ I also may have found two parts model M's for 700$ question, How are these dozers for working, are they as good has a D2 of the same year. also how are parts to find. I did a search on this board and couldn't find any info. Any help would be very much appreicated. Thanks Duane
Years ago I ran a Model M pulling a 6'9 disc working the same field as a 5U D2 pulling the same size disc. They were about equal in performance.
As far as dozing, I think the M is a little lighter than a D2. I have seen them fitted with big heavy dozers. This extra weight might help. First gear is a little fast. It might be a little tricky to learn to operate, but it should move just as much dirt as a D2.
Buy the parts tractors too. Do any of them have electric starters?
i looked at an old allis chalmers yesterday, the owner told me that it dies after about 10 minutes of running, i think he told me it was a 655 1974 or 75 model. I know nothing about these allis chalmers... now with my experience i would say that the fuel return is plugged up, i told him to replace all fuel lines up to the fuel pump. i am hoping that the fuel pump didnt die on this guy, but that could possibly be the problem too, the pads chains and rollers are shot as well as the track adjustment on the left side is there anyplace near new york that sells cheap u/c part i know of that itm out of NJ i think that that is who i will recommend but first things first i need to straighten the engine out for him- thanks in advance

HD5G fan belt sizes. Anyone know the size on the 2 fan belts?
Please help,
I buoght a HD21P with a 12 foot u blade and a tr21 ripper about a month ago. The undercarriage is in good shape. New shoes, chain, grousers, rollers, sprockets, and idlers. I also got quite a few spare parts, and in general am very happy with it.
Now, to my problems:
First trouble I am having is if I run it at anything over about half throttle it starts to heat up. I have pulled the radiator and had it rodded, pulled and tested the thermostats, rebuilt the waterpump, and checked the cooling system for combustion gasses etc. IT STILL OVERHEATS!
Next problem is when I got the tractor, it had an extra 12 volt battery installed to run an electric fuel pump. As I understand it, the fuel pump is supposed to run at about 30 to 60 pounds of fuel pressure. The excess fuel being supplied from the injector pump through a reduced orifice to the torque converter, then to a heat exchanger and then returned to the tank. Thinking this might be part of my heating problem, I rebuilt the mechanical pump and got it operating, but i still show very little fuel pressure an the guage on dash, but have very good flow back to the tank in the return line. Also, the books I have show a fuel pump that is driven off the accessory drive, a gear type pump, mine is driven directly off the injector pump. My pump is cam driven and is a piston type pump. The more I read and investigate the more confused I get.
If anyone can shed some light on these problems, please help. Thanks for reading my ramblings, and for any help.

I have a hd6g. I am having trouble keeping the tracks tight. You have to adjust the tracks by turning a threaded rod. Both sides are striped out. One side is welded in place. This side was like that when I bought it. The right hand side was hard to move. After moving it I put spacers in. This did not hold. It moved back to where it was. Do I need to put in more spacers? Or do I have more problems?

1963 hd-11g with final drive problem. have all manuals MUST SELL,BEST OFFER! jchandler59@hotmail.com
HD5 runs for first time in years. Ive never heard this engine run before. It sound like it has a knock but also sounds like diesel kackle. I put a steel rod against the engine in different places while pressing it against my ear. I could not hear a clear knock. But stand next to the machine and I hear a knock. Does the 2-71 make such noises normally?
No normally they do not make a knock, they normally sound like they are wound up and going to beat the band. The 271 is a two stroke engine.
When they are cold they are a bit noiser, Detroits of that vintage are very cold blooded and can be noisy for quite a while till they get up to operating temperate.
One thing to do is to warm it up, take off all accessory belts ect. Then run the machine to see if the noise is still there. Make sure that it is not comming from the clutch housing and or the hydraulic pump. If you are short hudralic fluid and or the pump is going bad ou can get a clack noise out of them. Frozen water in lines can do that do in the pump. The pump is attached to a shaft on the crankshaft pully.
Once that is eliminated, change oil, put in new filters and see what happens. Now it is easy to drop the pan off the engine and see how bad the gunk is and if there is any metal in the engine.
The noise could be from a fuel pump going bad, the rotors on the blower are hitting which can happen and that is expensive to fix if you ruin the lobs on the blower.
The first place to look at is pre detonation of the fuel and or the file rack is out of adjustment on that engine as to timing and amount of fuel getting to the cylines. Now that engine has the injectors and control rack in the head. The injectors are available as a reman. You just need to know the knozel tip size. Make sure that the nozel tip is clean and clear
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the info I will check all of the possibilities.
I did notice the engine never got hot enough to keep me from touching the head with my bear hand!
I will replace the thermostat and run it again til it gets hot! Hopefully that will cut down some of the smoke too ( stuck rings unburnt fuel)
I do have fresh filters, oil and anti freeze in it.
Also reman injectors and rebuilt blower, lapped valves. I dis-assembled the fuel pump and freed it up. It had locked up due to rust. It did not show much wear so I polished everything and replaced the drive coupling.
I have also had the pan off. It was full of sludge but I didn’t really see any metal. I replaced the rod bearing caps because the crank measured high limit on clearance. I just saw (in the book) that the bottom half of the mains could have been replaced at that time....hind sight is 20/20
We have to replace the check out the trans, ring and pinion and re-install the steering clutches, check out the final drive gears etc. We have a spare machine with gears and motor. Our plan is to go through the whole machine get it to function, run it awhile then rebuild the engine. Right now were just glad she runs!

Increasing Traction of Crawler in Sand
Hi Guys: I am considering purchase of an HD 5G shovel... it has street grousers on it. I want to use the machine to clean up cellar excavations in sand. Can you recommend how I can best proceed to increase its tractive potential in sand. The owner tells me it that it will slip in sand and causes me to think that I should not buy this machine. Any thoughts and suggestions are sincerely appreciated! Thanks Robert Peck in Great Bend, New York.
I need final drive parts for an allis chalmers hd-7. Might buy a parts tractor also if the under carriage was good.
What general section of the country are you located in?
I just bought (HD7W 1945-47) It has a straight Baker blade.
I got a partial book with it, but I still have questions. The support for the blade that attaches by the right rear sprocket, by a shaft is
broken. The shaft is broke. I have a used shaft. The used shaft has only 1 nut on the end. My question is. What keeps this shaft in the final
drive? It looks like if I pull off the outboard bearing and drill and tap a hole in the end of the broken shaft it would pull out leaving the
bearings gear etc, in the housing. Is this correct..The book talks about
dis assembling the finals but not just replacing this shaft..
I have a 844 engine (375 Horse version). The engine has less than 50 hours since new(was a backup for a generator). I would like to sell or trade this engine. I would be interested in Allis equipment (D road grader, HD11, 918 hoe, etc, I would prefer machines in need of repair. ). If you need this engine and you have some equipment contact me and we will work something out. Andrew 765-886-5717
HD7W DOZER. DOes anyone know of a manual that shows the rear axle stack up with a dozer blade. I have parts and srvice but the rear axle with dozer blade is not shown.
I have a broken axle and I am trying to determmine the cause of the break. I suspect loosness in the parts. Any input would be welcome
Tim, you might try the guys at www.pdmechanical.com or www.crawlerheaven.com
They post here from time to time and have parts for some old crawlers. Also, there is F.P. Smith in California. Good luck, Pete
I just bought an HD7 and it was delivered today. The fella said the left clutch was sticking a bit. I guess that was only the tip of the iceberg. Please don't laugh at my obvious newness. I'm used to wheel tractors. I can't get the crawler to turn at all, she did a bit but now won't. She moves forward and back fine. I pull the lever back, and that side stops. Pull the left lever and push the left pedal, she just stops and hitches and shudders. Pull both levers back, dead stop. Read elsewhere about push on a tree to work things loose, left track stops, right track digs in. Did I get a basket case or do I just need to learn about and do some adjustments? Thanks for any and all help!
Hi,
I have a couple of questions for anyone who knows. What years were the HD-5s made? What engine or engines were in them? Were there any weak points common to them? Also, were the engines common to any other AC equipment. Thanks in advance.
Greetings,

Need help adjusting the steering clutch on a FiatAllis FL14C! Can anyone out there help me?
Any help on adjusting the steering clutch on a FL14C FiatAllis can reach me at mikes@linkabit.com
I bought an HD7W dozer. Runs and steers great! U/C has 2 bad rollers I mean BAD! the shafts are half worn thru. I have made new shafts have the bearings and new seals on order..
My problem is the right rear axle. I think because the rollers ( also on the right side) were bad and the block and bushing that attaches the rear mount of the blade was also sloppy the axle broke. I got a new axle as part of the deal. Right now I am trying to remove the old axle. I have a book but it does not tell you much about the axle. I have the final drive gear and housing off. I also have the cover off of the bevel gear housing. I can see both ends of the axle and I have removed a set screw that holds it in.
So far I have welded a 1"-8 nut on the broken end and have tried using a jack screw to pull the shaft out. I hasen't budged. My next idea was to put a porta-power or bottle jack inside the bevel gear housing and try and push the axle out.
Anybody else ever remove one of these axles?
I have a 1966 A/C HD7G Crawler loader. Everything seemed fine until one day I went out to run it & it wouldnt move in high gear forward & reverse. In low gear foward & reverse it will barely move, hardly enough power to move itself. When I parked it the day before it was running fine. Any suggestions were to start trouble shooting this problem.

HD 6 PTO question:
My dad has an HD6 crawler, recent acquisition. He wants to run his Belsaw sawmill (540 rpm, shaft drive) from a rear pto on the dozer. It used to have a hydraulic pump apparently, seller had a shaft manufactured that comes through a carrier in the back and turns a pump-driver gear box...ho-made pto basically but it's a 3/1 reduction and turns in the wrong direction. We need to know what the rpm the rear shaft would be turning at (straight thru?) and any suggestions on finding a stock pto unit for this machine? Thanks, dj
I have what seems to be a late 50's AC HD5. Runs great, goes forward and backward, but will not turn left or right. What is this possibly worth?

Here's a nice old HD15. The deceased owner's brother told me that it had been "rebuilt" just prior to the owner's passing, and that it had a "7G" undercarriage. The fellow said that it was originally set up for scraper work.

Can anyone tell me about the hd20 dozer -- I have a chance to pick one up for $6000.00 -- It has the garwood cable blade with 2 winch drums on the back -- I've seen it in action and the motor runs like new and can push some dirt. the under carraige looks good with new sprockets. Is this a good deal ? I am building a pond and then plan to resell it. Do you think it would sell easily ? Any known big problems with this machine ? What does one of these way with the blade ? Thanks for any and all help.
I need a set of fuel injectors for an allis hd-16 (pre 4000 serial #). The engine is an 844 cid power plant. I think the old Buda 844 is the same engine. any help would be much appreciated.
I am looking for information on an Allis HD16AC, serial #4197, 1959 model with torque converter and constant mesh tranny. The problem I am having is that when the hand clutch in disengaged the tranny will not stop completely to allow for shifting gears. It seems to be hanging up somewhere, and with the clutch inspection cover off, it makes a rattling sound. I have a service manual, but it doesn't cover the torque converter model very well, and I have adjusted the clutch to no avail. I am also looking for a onwers manual, and maybe a parts manul for this crawler too. Also, if anyone knows where there is a ROPS or cab for one of these, let me know. Thanks, Darrell, JR. (MN)
I am looking at 2 HD5 loaders. They are in pretty rough shape. I think both of them run but one has a stuck steering clutch. What should I expect to pay for one of these machines. He wants $2000.00 but that seems a little high for the way the machines look.

I am in need of some salvage parts for either a 655B Allis Chalmers track loader or a 653 Dozer? Please let me know if you have any info. Thanks Stephen

Have a HD-5 with several rebuilt drive components. It has a front mount hydralic pump that runs an after market blade. I am trying to find a winch or winch/crane combo to drag trees with. Some guy named "Doc" from back east said many state and municpalties used the HD-5 with this type of equipment. I use this little crawler here in New Mexico to do range and timber management to harvest trees and mill them. I make heavy furniture and this crawler is just perfect. I can't believe how strong the little guy is.
Also looking for a replacement seat. I had a catalog of a business called Tractor Supply that went out of business a few years ago that had replacement seats and arm rests. If anyone can help I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you in advance
Looking for some help on an HD-5: My father has a 55 in need of some work. He does not have the tools to do this job himself so I figured I'd see if anyone near him can help. The spring on the adjustor will not push the idler back when the idler is forced rearward under pressure. This is what he thinks... He believes the idler bracket is either shimmed to tight or the shimms are rusted?? Basically if your making a turn under pressure the track will loosen up but will not return back to its normal position. He could do it by himself 40 years ago but not at this time. He is located in the Hartford Connecticut area. Any help would be appreciated.
We recently rebuilt the injectors(Two not cracking just dripping) on a 545b Fiat Allis wheel loader a wonderful machine but now it is very Very hard to start, runs for about 30 sec and quit's.Once you get it going it seems to be ok, starts good after it's warmed up.We check the fuel pressure and pump relef going back to the tank all is Ok.The engine Sin Is 8065-24-091-757778.Any help on this would be great,We would like to Time the engine but don't know what the timing is suppost to be. Does anyone know where I can get a steering clutch pressure plate for Allis Chalmers 653 dozer?
Does anyone knoe where I can get a steering clutch pressure plate for an Allis Chalmers 653 dozer???
I am rebuilding a dump cylinder from my Allis Chalmers HD-5.
It has a 2 part piston. V-ring in front part, bearing ring in back. The parts book shows the two parts tight together with a shim under the v-ring packing. (no instructions on how to set shims)
My question is how tight should I make the v-rings to the cylinder wall. I have new V-rings and no shim so I have to set it up from scratch! If I stack everything up finger tight I have about .125 gap between the two parts of the piston. When I slide the cylinder on, it rubs all around the cylinder wall but not tight.
I figure I'll tighen the the two parts until I'm satified with the fit then dis-assemble it and make a shim.
anybody ever rebuild one of these before??
How tight are new cylinders?
I was given an HD-9 by a friend of mine if I could get it out of his backyard. He was using it when the front idler bearings went out and the track came off and broke a link. The dozer belonged to his father and they got into an arguement over it. The dozer sat 12 years until the father passed away and they tried to sell it at auction. They didn't get any bids on it, so the son was going to cut it up for scrap. After he said I could have it, I put new fuel in it and two new batteries and it started right up. There was a stuck injector and it wanted to run full blast. I fixed that and my son and I worked for a couple of weeks off and on to put the track back on. The guy that gave it to me had new links, pins and bushings to fix the track. The father had already had the bearings fixed in the idler and it was in the garage waiting to be put on. The pics are of the dozer after I cleared the brush and cut down the tree that had grown up between the blade and dozer. I have since brought old girl home and have used it a few times. The only thing wrong with it now is a stuck left hand steering clutch. If anyone can help me on how to fix this, I would appreciate the info. I have already tried the paint thinner in the clutch technique and it hasn't worked. I will send in some more recent pics when I get them.

Here are three more pics of the HD-9. Oh by the way the muffler was rusted away on the engine so I had to make a new one. If anyone is interested I could explain how I did it.

Hedrick,
Looks like you got a great deal. As for your clutch, it looks like you may have to pull it out. The solvent trick is the only one I know of and if that doesn't work you have to pull it. I just pulled mind from my HD5. It wasn't too bad. The hard part comes when you find out the prices for all those new disks you need, and look out if you have to replace the throw out bearing. Are you going to restore it?
nutz-n-bolts,
I do plan on restoring it to a degree. I am going to repaint it, but this is a farm dozer and not a show piece. The engine seems to run well and starts everytime. Someone has put an alternator on it and it isn't working so I will probably replace it or have it fixed. I also can't get it into all of the gears. The hi/lo works and I can get it into two forward gears and two reverse, so it still works ok. I was pleased to see that the hitch pin and the hold down was sitll in place. I kind of assume that the tilt blade was added later or do you think that was factory installed ?

looking for a allis chalmers model d or dd grader in mn.
How many teeth are on the BENDIX of a starter for a 2-71 detroit?
The facts are confusing me.
Every reference I look at, for 2-71 states the starter has 11 teeth.
12 volt, 11 teeth CW rotation.
However, when I pulled mine, it had 12 teeth. And yes, it was starting fine.
11 teeth? 12 teeth?
The starter # in my book is Delco Remy 1109114. My starter is a 1109114.
So should I buy a 12 tooth replacement like the one in it or 11 tooth as every reference I can find on 2-71 units?

I am looking for A nice original AC HD19 for my personal collection. Please let me know. Thanks for your time. (406) 486-5462.
I currently puchased an HD-5. I am having some problems with the engine. It has the Detroit 2-71. Only one cylinder will initially fire ( I got injectors checked and both are in good shape). After about 5 minutes the other cylinder will start. The latest development is that it is blowing white smoke out of the exhaust and the crankcase. It is building up pressure in the crankcase. I thought maybe moisture getting in the engine from the head. I pulled the head and found one cylinder was rust color and the other black. The gasket was partially cracked in one spot and was installed backwards(I have no idea why, but one of the coolant ports was blocked because of this). I got a new gasket and installed it and there was no change in running condition. I would apppreciate any help with this problem.
I have an HD7g that won't turn. I have done some testing and am not getting pressure from the steering pumps. Steering pumps share a common sump with trans pump and torque convertor pump which both work. When I bought the crawler there was mickey-mouse setup on the sump line to prime the steering pump which the seller used to get the crawler to steer. This option does not work now. Any ideas or offers to buy would be greatly appreciated.

The hydraulic rams on the blade leaks and I've been told by a hydraulic shop that even if they replaced the rams it will still leak as there isn't any seal or wiper to stop it from leaking?
Has anyone got any good suggestions how I can fix this problem?
I'm also looking for a decent radiator as mine has had a few tree branches pushed through it over the years and it's getting close to the time to repair or replace it.
HD-5 Track adjusting screw.
I have 2 HD-5 tractors and both need track adjustments. But I've been unable to break loose the adjustment screws. I even had to cut the lock flange bolts....they were rusted so badly. I have wrapped the screw with rags soaked in penetrating oil with no success so far. I sure would appreciate suggestions.
I took out the grease fittings on my 6G & kept spraying PB Blaster in the fitting for about two weeks I also sprayed it inside the yoke where the threads are. I got lucky & they came loose but I did use a 4ft pipe wrench.Hope this helps

Hello,
I have also had success using Kroil liquid in a grease gun and benifitting from the gun's pressure to force in the Kroil. I did this with a rust-frozen shift rod on an HD-5G transmission. I drilled/threaded a hole in the tranmission casting and installed the grease zerk, then used the Kroil. Worked great to loosen the shift rod.
Regarding an Allis-Chalmers HD11B crawler dozer, does anyone have any manuals (parts, service, operator's) that they would be willing to sell or make a copy of??
I am working on a HD-11 dozer for the club i belong to and we removed the engine oil hoses to replace them. To make a long story short on of the members got the elbows all mixed up on me and now i dont know how they go back together or where they go. any help would be great. a picture would also be worth a thousand words. i beleive it is a 1950's hd-11 with a hydro blade and i beleive a AC diesel engine.

It has the triangle logo on the left side of the hood.

Trying to find an old crawler to rebuild. It doesnt need to be running, or even have a good engine. But at least complete from the trans to the tracks. It can be very rough but it should be under $1000 US dollars if it is really rough.

Hey Guys...recently purchased an old HD6 with only 1300 hours on the frame and about a hundred on the engine. Noticed that the right clutch takes a hugh amount of pressure to make it work and was wondering how to adjust it. The left seems to work very well...so I'm thinking just adjustment. But maybe it'll need replacement. Can one still buy new clutch parts? Thanks in advance for any help!
my hd5 does not turn to the right.it does but i really have to put pressure on the break to get it to turn.hope someone can help.thanx

I recently bought an HD 11 B. I have been using it and getting a feel for it and I like it. I noticed that "Sawmill" had checked a serial number for someone in a previous post. I have looked and looked and I cannot find a place to reference my serial number to the year and model. My serial number is 25L16615 and any help would be greatly appreciated.
This info is not written in blood. One book says the 25L started with #12,000 in 1968. If I go to a book that just lists 11-B's & look just at #'s it's a 1971. Best I can do. HT
Hi.I recently bought hd5 crawler loader. It runs fine but...it does not turn to the right very good. It go's straight left and backword very good. IT doesnt turn to the right very good. I have to put lots of pressure on the right brake for it to turn. Sometimes it does turn and sometimes and most of the time it does not.can someone please tell me what might b wrong.

I have an old Allis Chalmers HD-7 tracked dozer. Wondering about some basic questions and looking for some advice.
Does anyone know the years the HD-7 were made?
Who made the motors for the HD-7 Dozers? What is the HP rating?
What is the weight?
Did they ever come with winches, and if so, what was required to operate the winch?
When it was last parked, it did run, but I think we have a electrical problem. Its a positive to ground system. I'd like to get it back operational.
1. Can anyone describe the basic electrical ignition system for me so I can check to see if it works.
2. Can anyone suggest methods to wake the diesel engine. For instance with a gasoline engine, I would pour penetrating oil through the spark plug holes to break the pistons free. Any advice would be helpful.
Dennis Spang, call the Midland Press at 1-800-228-7821. They are the authorized manual reproducer for Cat. See if they have what you need.Good quality reproductions, unlike Jensales.
That would be your last bet. You might also contact your loacal cat dealer, sometimes Used Parts has manuals they get with dismantled machines. Hope this helps,alan627b
1943 AC HD-7.
Is there any way of testing a starter assembly, both top and bottom, to see if it works? The manual says it has a plunge pedal, but ours seems to have some sort of toggle switch and I can't seem to get the starter to make any noise at all, and I know I am getting at least some current to it.

I have a Allis Chalmers Model "M" gas powered dozer. It has sat for a few years prior to me buying it. I was moving it and it started to sputter and died. I found rust in the sediment bowl. It was flooding gas out of the intake so I pulled the carb and cleaned it out, and added a fuel filter. I can't get it to start. Can anyone provide the intial settings I should have the idle and mainjet adjustment needles set at? It will fire on 1 cylinder and die. It has had a recent set of points installed in the mag. Next step is some new plugs. Anyone have any ideas what I should check? It ran great prior to this? This is a hand crank model, and I have gotten plenty of practice trying to get her to go!
The manual only says that turning the idle adjustment screw IN makes the mixture RICHER.
For mainjet adjustment it is the opposite, turning the screw IN makes the mixture LEANER.
I would try turning the Idle and Mainjet screws out 1 to 1 1/2 turns as a starting point. Also be sure the butterfly stop screw is adjusted so it will idle. Good luck, Pete
I will try to see what happens with the settings as you recommend. I had them both set at about 3 turns out. It idled fine prior to this happening so I left the butterfly adjuster alone. I think there may be a problem with the mag, or the plugs, so I am going to also put new plugs in as well, and check for a strong spark. I had pulled the plugs and tried some either with no results. Will keep you posted
THANKS PETE!
I need a service manual for a 87-88 Fiat Allis fd5
Just wanted to let you know I got the Model "M" fired up. I cleaned the carb out again and made sure all passages were clear, made sure it had spark, put in a new set of plugs and she lit off on the 3rd crank. I think that all these older machines should definatly have a replaceable filter added to the fuel system in additon to the screen and sediment bowls most came with. Debris and rust in the tank were my main problems. Now I am onto some track maintenance. THANKS for the help!

I have a HD-7G serial 24475 with a clutch that won't release. It is a wet clutch. When I tore into the machine, I found that some bolts were missing that bolt the clutch assembly into the drum and others are loose. Several bolts had loosened so much that they were sheared off from the turning of the drum. Would this cause the clutch to not release. It seems to me that the clutch would just slip constantly. Any thoughts before I go any further. I'm hoping I can replace the bolts and loc tite them without removing the track and sprocket.
HD5G - I need to replace the left side steering clutches in an HD5. Can anyone comment on the approximate cost of materials and investment of time?

I just bought a hd5g and I am changing all the fluids and need to get oil and fuel filters for but don't know where to get or order, also have no nubers to reference from. The fuel filter is on the side of the block, and the oil filter is next to seat on the side of the machine, looks kinda big. Any help or number would be greatful.
To Peter Malone: I have an 1957 HD 11b and had the same problem w/ AGCO. My parts number were on the canisters and I was able to cross with fram, wix, and baldwin filters.
I have pulled the steering clutches on a 1957 HD11b SN#4403 in order to replace one of the drive hubs which was broken on the rt side and have one broken brake band at the welded loops. But it appears as i need to rebuild the left clutch for sure and possibly the right clutch which i haven't disassembled. I do not have the part numbers for the discs. Are they the fiber discs or the bimettalic and require 15 w/ two being tapered according to service manual(specified thickness .152-.157 and mine are at.125). The steel disc measure out Ok from what i could measure. i have to get a proper caliper to check for sure. i bought the dozer last year and has worked wonderfully except right now. Repainted it orange this spring. i'll have to send pictures when i get it going again.
HI The plates less.132 thick must be replaced.HECTOR
Thanks Hector I did find out I needed the metallic discs. Also have not got the drive hub pulled. trying to locate a puller that isn't too long to fit in the housing

Hi I'm looking for parts for an Allis Chalmers(Fiat Allis) HD7GB. I need a Rear Ring Gear (Bevel Gear) and the Bevel Pinion Shaft that comes out the back of the transmission.(If someone has a 7GB transmission that has not been broken down, that has a good pinion I would be interested.) The model I have is the later 6 cyl. model and the parts are not the same as those on the earlier HD7G. Please let me know if you or someone you know has this part.
HI I HAVE THE BEVEL GEAR BUT NOT THE PINION.
Thanks Hector. I may or may not have a friend giving me the gear. So I don't need it yet. I'll keep in touch in case I do, but I really need the pinion (part #70667743), so if you know anyone let me know. I have a parts machine with the same problem so I would be willing to trade parts off of that. Thanks
I have and older HD 7 and I believe I need to remove the steering clutch for an overhaul. What is the best way to remove the pinion? The manual I have shows a large slide hammer that threads on to the shaft. We don't have anything like that, is there an alternativew way to do it?
Does any one Know the weight and HP of a FD 14E dozer?
Hello all,
I have a HD-5 dozer, that I am repairing the clutch on. I sent the pressure plate and clutch disc off to get redone. When the came back I tried to reinstall both items, I found that they would not fit. I beleve that they made the pressure plate and clutch disc to thick. I was wondering how thick the pressure plate is suppose to be and the clutch disc. Thanks for any help.
Hello everybody. My name is Josh and this is the first I have ever really been on this site. I have a 1966 HD-4, 6-way blade and 403 winch. I bought this little brute about 6 years ago and have put it to good use since. If I can figure out how put pics up I will. This is a great site! Josh.

Hi All. Trying to learn as much as I can. I have an HD7W, according to the serial. Like the other fella's post, my left side does not work. I took the clutch cover off and watched the clutch housing. With the right lever back, the crawler stops, the left drum continues to turn but does not drive the crawler. Pulling the left clutch back, it still turns. Do I have a bad itermediate gear and clutch? Do I have to tear the left side apart to fix? Thanks!

I have an HD5 loader/crawler that has oil in the radiator. I checked the crank case and no antifreeze is in the engine oil. I was pushing dirt on a hill side and just happened to see the oil around the radiator cap, the crawler was not blowing any white smoke and no noticable oil is missing from the crank or hydrolics. Any ideas would be appriciated, I'm pulling it in the machine shed this weekend.

Land clearing in Alaska. There is a agricultural area in the Copper River Valley where three different owners have three Allis Chalmers HD 16's working to clear the land. I own one and its kind of neat to see these old machines still in use and getting the job done. If anyone cares I'll take a picture of them working together. Two of them are two serial numbers off. Anyone know how many of these HD-16's were made? Also if anyone could tell me what year my HD 16D serial number 5658 is, I would appreciate it.
Recently bought A-C M100 motor grader. While using our 'new' grader this last Sat we broke an axle. Need left rear axle-parts. DARN we aren't finished with road building yet.
Am getting manuals from a posting from '03! I contacted the gentleman wondering if he was even still at the e-dress which he is!, and he still has what I need and is sending them soon. Small world. Thanks for any help on this one.
Josh--your HD16 should be 1962, # 5448-5731 are 1962. Starting with # 101 in 1955 until 15521 in 1981 I guess 15420 were made. Would like to see pictures of land clearing. Have two HD11,s and HD6, also had HD15. Good tractors. Too bad they didn't use cummins engines years ago, there probably wouldn't be any yellow tractors today. Also would like to find a ROPS for an HD6 somewhere in the northwest if I can. Good Dozin.
I need a belly pan for an Allis Chalmers DD3899SS Part# 222781 if anyone knows where to find one please e-mail me at kentedge@hotmail.com.

Does anyone know if parts will interchange between a HD11 hydraulic operated dozer and a HD11 cable dozer? I have the hydraulic one and answered an ad selling "a HD11 " for parts.
the owner says it is cable operated with wide tracks.
will the tracks interchange? radiator? drive train?
HI If the cable one is not a serie b the parts are interchangable.

I'm looking for a root rake for HD6, 8 ft blade. I'm located in NC Missouri.
I have a AC HD6G ser# 15396, with a wet engine clutch that I am in the process of reviving. The oil in the reservoir for the engine clutch is just below the intake hose for the supply pump. There is no pickup tube within the housing and reading the dip stick shows that the oil level is just right. I noticed this after replacing the supply hose due to being cracked. My question is: Should there be a pickup tube or is the dipstick wrong and I need to fill the reservoir up with more oil? I am afraid to run the machine for fear of burning up the engine clutch until I figure this problem out. Thanks for any help.
